Art Planner: James Rosenquist in Memoriam, Last chance for Tour de Shine

Local legend: James Rosenquist in Memoriam

After pop art pioneer James Rosenquist passed in March, a memorial exhibition of 12 of the artist's prints is on display at the Tampa Museum of Art. During his career, which spanned more than five decades, he exhibited in nearly all of the major museums in New York City — including the Guggenheim, MoMA and the Whitney— and divided his time between his homes and studios there and in Aripeka, an unincorporated community on the Pasco-Hernando county border. After being invited to work at USF's Graphicstudio in 1971, he made the area his second home and became a fixture in the Tampa art scene, including an advisory role at the Tampa Museum of Art. The 12 pieces from the museum's permanent collection, many large-scale and from 1975 to 2000, are an important representation of the commercial art process that Rosenquist and other pop artists popularized in the 1960s. The exhibit runs through June 25. tampamuseum.org.

Losing a Local Staple: Nuance Galleries Closing

After 36 years in business, Tampa art staple Nuance Galleries will close its doors in mid June. You can go say goodbye from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at a closing party. The gallery, which also does framing, will be offering discounts of 20 to 70 percent on artwork. Nuance has an extensive collection of 20th century Cuban art owner Rob Rowen purchased in 2013. The 15 artists all hail from the historic district of Oriente, and most of the work focuses on Cuba. The collection of 300 paintings is for sale as a whole, but the gallery is offering a discount on individual pieces. Other collections include international and local artists' paintings, sculptures and prints. Rowen will still have an online gallery, but he is going to devote most of his time to the Global Action Coalition, a nonprofit organization that works in Nepal and Africa. nuancegalleries.com.
