Art this week: Visual history of protests, last chance for Star Wars and the Power of Costume

AT MFA: BONNIE SIEGLER, STAR WARS ENDING

Bonnie Siegler, an influential graphic designer, has compiled a comprehensive history of the visual language of protest in her book, Signs of Resistance: A Visual History of Protest in America. Itís a fascinating journey through time from the Revolutionary War through memes of President Trump. Siegler will be speaking at the Museum of Fine Arts Thursday, in dialogue with executive director Kristen Shepherd. 6:30-8 p.m. at 255 Beach Drive NE, St. Petersburg. Included with museum admission, which is $5 after 5 p.m. mfastpete.org.

Read an interview with Siegler.

The adage is really true: All good things must come to an end. The Star Wars and the Power of Costume exhibit will end on Sunday, so itís your last chance to see it before it goes to some other galaxy far, far away. Donít miss the opportunity to feel the dark sideís energy in Darth Vaderís costume, wax philosophical with Yoda, right, and learn about the inspiration behind Princess Leiaís famous buns. Oh, and all of Padmťís gowns are everything. The special exhibition requires a separate timed ticket of $25, $18 ages 7 to 17, free for children 6 and younger. Includes admission to the other galleries.

FRANK STRUNK III: DELIVER ME

Itís hard to imagine this art scene without Frank Strunk III, a fixture here for 20 years. His persona is just as distinguishable as his metal sculptures, and kind of matches them: rugged with some hard edges, but deep and thoughtful at the core.

This month, his "Deliver Me" exhibit opened at Leslie Curranís Articles gallery. "Deliver Me" runs through Saturday at 1145 and 1431 Central Ave., St. Petersburg. Open 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Friday and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday. Free and open to the public. (727)898-6061. articlesstpete.com.
