Top concert picks this week: Little Steven Van Zandt, Turnt Up Tour, Fiesta Maxima

E STREET BYPASS: Little Steven and the Disciples of Soul

Ask Little Steven Van Zandt to pick his favorite songwriter in rock — excluding his boss Bruce Springsteen, of course — and he has to think a minute. He admires veterans like Billie Joe Armstrong, Dave Grohl and Eddie Vedder, and is a fan of a younger guy named Kurt Baker. But he admits thoughtful rock isn’t as prevalent as it used to be. "It certainly has returned to being an underground cult, which is where it started in the early ’50s," Van Zandt said. His SiriusXM station and syndicated radio show Little Steven’s Underground Garage is "the only place you’re going to hear rock ’n’ roll. It’s easier to hear blues on the radio. It’s easier to hear jazz on the radio." But rock still rules live, as you’ll see when his 15-piece Disciples of Soul roll into Clearwater’s Capitol Theatre, 405 Cleveland St., at 8 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are $39 at (727) 791-7400 or atthecap.com, but if you’re an elementary, middle or high school teacher, you can get in free. Those who sign up for a two-hour seminar on a music curriculum created by Van Zandt’s Rock and Roll Forever Foundation will receive two free passes. Space is limited, get details and RSVP at teachrock.com/tour.

CRUNK HISTORY: Turnt Up Tour

Dig that brick you call a first-gen iPod out of its shoebox in your closet and see if it can still take a charge. If so, five bucks says you’ll hear Soulja Boy’s Crank That (Soulja Boy), Chingy’s Right Thurr, the Ying Yang Twins’ Wait (The Whisper Song), Petey Pablo’s Raise Up or Twista’s Soul Jam. In which case you’re going to want to pick up a ticket to the Turnt Up Tour, 8 p.m. Thursday at the USF Sun Dome, 4202 E Fowler Ave., Tampa. All five of those acts will take the stage in what promises to be the most 2004 concert of 2018. So dig out your sweatbands and shutter shades and practice your Superman dance, because all your old MySpace pals might be watching. $20 and up. (813) 974-3004. sundomearena.com.

MUY CALIENTE: Fiesta Maxima

It’s shaping up to be a banner year for Latin music in Tampa Bay ... although, to be honest, that isn’t saying much. Still, two arena shows in one year is more than we usually get. Pop-reggaeton crossover sensation J Balvin hits the USF Sun Dome this fall, but first, on Sunday, it’s Fiesta Maxima, the annual spring show organized by Spanish station 92.5 Maxima. Salsa singer Victor Manuelle, above, headlines this year’s event at 8 p.m. Sunday at the Sun Dome, 4202 E Fowler Ave., Tampa. A 16-time Grammy and Latin Grammy nominee, Manuelle has more No. 1 singles on Billboard’s Tropical Songs chart (28) than any other singer in history, including Marc Anthony and Gilberto Santa Rosa. $15 and up. (813) 974-3004. sundomearena.com.

SUMMER BREEZE: Bahamas

Somewhere between the shambling shuffling of Mac DeMarco and sonic slickness of John Mayer, you’ll find Bahamas, a.k.a. Canadian singer-songwriter Afie Jurvanen. On his new album Earthtones, he sets up camp in a cozy corner of coffeehouse pop, coaxing breezy folk-funk ditties from his guitar and band. He manages to make yacht-rock-styled R&B sound not just palatable, but excellent. Even if you wear shoes to his concert on Friday — and you should — you’ll feel like kicking them off and basking in his groovy glow. 8 p.m. Orpheum, 1915 E Seventh Ave., Ybor City. $18 and up. (813) 248-9500. theorpheum.com.

FEEL THE HEAT: Hot Water Music

Twenty-five years into a career full of stops and starts and 7-inch splits, Hot Water Music are back where they always belonged: in Florida, playing ragged, raging sets for a club full of devoted fans. Chuck Ragan’s beloved Gainesville punk outfit is back on the road in support of last year’s Light It Up, and at 8 p.m. Sunday they’ll play an all-too-rare show in Tampa, where in 2013 they kicked off one of their occasional reunion tours. Dikembe and Expert Timing open at the Orpheum. $22 and up.

JAM ON: Orange Blossom Jamboree

After nearly a decade, the Orange Blossom Jamboree has become one of the most popular annual festivals at Sertoma Youth Ranch, 85 Myers Road, Brooksville. It’s one of the best jam, blues and folk fests south of Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park in Live Oak, with a cult of fandom all its own. This year’s fest, which runs through Sunday, features dozens of acts including Bobby Lee Rodgers, the Applebutter Express, Shak Nasti, Resinated, the Melody Trucks Band and Cope, a beloved Tampa jam band playing rare reunion shows on Friday and Saturday. Weekend passes start at $89. orangeblossomjamboree.com.
