MATTHEWS, N.C. — Juan Tejada scored twice and the Rowdies got a 3-1 victory over Charlotte on Saturday night to move into second place in the USL Championship’s Eastern Conference.

The Rowdies (15-5-7, 52 points) sit one point behind East leader New York Red Bulls II and one ahead of Nashville, a 1-0 loser to Saint Louis on Saturday.

Tampa Bay opened the scoring seven minutes in against Charlotte. Leo Fernandes put the ball in a perfect spot for Tejada, who tapped it in from a few yards out, beating goalkeeper Brandon Miller at his near post.

The Rowdies added to their lead in the 49th minute when Tejada tapped in a cross from Sebastian Guenzatti. It was Tejada’s 10th goal of the season.

The Rowdies got their final goal in the 74th minute when substitutes Jaime Siaj and Lucky Mkosana teamed up, with Siaj finishing a give-and-go.

Charlotte’s lone goal came in the 83rd minute when an Independence free kick led to three consecutive shots on goal. Rowdies goalkeeper John McCarthy saved the first two but couldn’t keep Hugh Roberts’ effort out.

The Rowdies’ 15th win is a team modern-era record (from 2010) for the regular season. They won 14 in 2017.
