Florida State's coaching staff had its first shakeup Monday when offensive coordinator Walt Bell left to become the head coach at UMass. The Minutemen announced the move Monday evening. Bell spent the previous two seasons as the offensive coordinator at Maryland before joining Seminoles coach Willie Taggart's staff in January. The season didn't go well. FSU averaged 21.9 points (No. 115 nationally) and 5.12 yards per play (No. 110). The Seminoles finished 5-7 for their first losing record since 1976.But Bell, 34, is regarded as a bright up-and-coming offensive mind. He replaces Mark Whipple, who was fired after a 4-8 season (that included a 58-42 home loss to USF).Bell's departure creates a high-profile vacancy Taggart must fill. His choice will be an interesting one about the program's direction after his Gulf Coast Offense struggled in Year 1.
