Dr. Delay: It’s been more than a year. Will the I-275 S ramp to I-75 N ever reopen in Manatee County?

When the project originally began on July 29, 2018, the Department of Transportation projected it would take 10 months to complete. A year and change later, some readers donít see an end date in sight.
The Florida Department of Transportation originally closed the southbound I-275 ramp to northbound I-75 for 10 months to replace the entire bridge deck of the overpass, but it's taken more than a year to complete. A detour was created that will have drivers exit on the US-41 exit to take that road to College Avenue where drivers can get back to I-75.

Though the Doc gets many inquiries about the interstates that cut through our area, today let’s turn our attention a bit south.

A reader raised a concern about the yearlong (and counting) bridge deck replacement project along the southbound Interstate 275 ramp to northbound Interstate 75 in Manatee County.

The work for the $8 million project requires complete closure of the ramp and forces all traffic to detour off the interstate at U.S. 41.

When the project began on July 29, 2018, the Department of Transportation projected it would take 10 months to complete.

But it has taken well over a year and some readers don’t see an end date in sight.

'Anyone who regularly drives the area can see that the work will not be completed by tomorrow," said Alan Renfrow, a Sun City center resident.

Well, it’s certainly not tomorrow, but the state Department of Transportation anticipates the ramp will open to traffic in late November.

“Unfortunately, there were delays as a result of unknown deterioration to portions of the bridge structure which needed to be addressed,” said Brian Rick from the DOT.

Rick also said the weather has contributed to the delays throughout construction.
