TAMPA — A 23-year-old woman was killed early Thursday when she was struck by a vehicle as she walked along Adamo Drive, according to Tampa police. The driver told police she never saw the pedestrian.

Tampa police say they don’t know why Savannah Lindsey Merrell was walking in the eastbound, outside lane of Adamo Drive at about 3:30 a.m. She was headed east and had nearly reached E Orient Road, police said, when she was struck by an eastbound 2015 Toyota Corolla traveling in the same lane.

Merrell, who would have celebrated her 24th birthday on Aug. 30, died at the scene of the crash, police said.

The driver, Tiana Najai Brown, 19, told officer she did not see the pedestrian before the crash. The driver remained at the crash scene and cooperated with investigators. There were no signs the driver was impaired, police said.
