TAMPA — A Tampa police officer shot a man who lunged at the officer with a knife early Saturday, police said.Officers were called to the 2500 block of W Kenmore St. about 1:50 a.m. to respond to a suicidal man who told the operator, "I apologize to the cop that has to shoot me," according to a news release. The man, whose name was not released, was armed with a knife and charged at a responding officer, police said. The officer used his stun gun on the man but he continued to charge, police said. The officer tried to retreat and then, fearing for his life, fired his service weapon, hitting the man at least once, police said.The man dropped the knife but continued to move toward the officer, according to police. Back-up officers arrived and successfully used a stun gun to take the man into custody. He was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital to be treated for wounds that were not life-threatening, police said.No officers were injured.
