SPRING HILL — The 65-year-old woman who plowed her car through a Beef O’ Brady’s restaurant on Tuesday and injured five customers has been cited by state troopers.

Barbara Markowski, of Spring Hill, was cited for using improper and unsafe equipment by the Florida Highway Patrol, which said the brakes on her 2007 Saturn sedan were “malfunctioning” at the time of the crash.

The incident took place at about 1:40 p.m. at the Barclay Crossing Shopping Center at Spring Hill Drive and Barclay Avenue. The Saturn was travelling east on Spring Hill Drive when troopers said Markowski lost control.

She drove over the median and westbound lanes onto the shoulder and drove through a flower bed. She sideswiped a truck, struck a parked car and then crashed through a restaurant wall lined with booths, striking customers inside and outside.

One of the injured patrons was flown to Bayonet Point Hospital Trauma Center. The other four were also hospitalized.
