SPRING HILL — Into the Woods and Disney’s Beauty & the Beast were the obvious favorites at Stage West Community Theater’s recent “Fire & Ice” HAMI Awards gala. The two musicals won all the awards for the Main Stage shows, with Into the Woods taking nine awards, including Favorite Show; and Beauty & the Beast winning five.
There was more of a mix of favorites for the Forum Stage plays. Steel Magnolias was a clear favorite, winning nine awards, including Favorite Show. Of Mice and Men and Duets & Vignettes each won three awards.
The awards were presented in recognition of the 2018-19 theater season.
The HAMI Awards, which have been given out since 1992, are Stage West’s version of the Tony Awards. Since Stage West couldn’t call theirs “Tony” awards, they playfully decided to name the award for the “hams” they all were. That’s according to Vince Vanni, who was among the first HAMI winners for his portrayal of Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof during Stage West’s 1991-92 season.
