Pasco County School Board member Colleen Beaudoin took the board gavel for the first time on Tuesday, as her colleagues elevated her from the vice chair position to the chairman’s seat.

Beaudoin, who represents central Pasco, is completing her first term and seeking reelection. She is a former Hillsborough County teacher who now is a University of Tampa math instructor, and has one son currently in the school system.

For its vice chairman, the board chose its most veteran member. Allen Altman, who runs the Farm Bureau insurance office in Dade City, first won election in 2006 and was reelected to a fourth term in 2018.

After choosing its leadership, the board discussed when to hold its meetings during 2020. One proposal would have moved all the sessions to 6 p.m., a change from past practice in which the board has held one meeting each month at 9:30 a.m.

Superintendent Kurt Browning noted that in 2019, many of those morning meetings were rescheduled to the evening to accommodate parents who wished to attend public hearings on important issues such as school boundaries.

Board members said they did not like the idea of eliminating the morning sessions completely because many residents do not drive at night, and some work at night. The goal, board member Alison Crumbley said, is to keep the board accessible to the largest number of people possible.
