Whole Foods shoppers in Florida first to get Amazon Prime discounts

Floridians with Amazon Prime accounts are the first shoppers who can score discounts at Whole Foods across the state, the organic grocer announced today.

While Amazon — which owns Whole Foods — plans to unroll the Prime discounts across the country by the summer, Tampa Bay and the rest of Florida can get 10 percent off sale items and exclusive deals starting today.

There are 27 Whole Foods locations across Florida, including three local locations: two in Tampa and one in Clearwater.

Deals lasting until May 22 include 40 percent of one-pound packages of strawberries, $10 off per pound of Halibut steaks and buy-one-get-one sparkling water.

Already, Prime members can get 5 percent cash back Amazon rewards on Whole Food purchases and same-day Whole Foods grocery delivery in Tampa Bay and several other cities.

Amazon announced last month it has more than 100 million Prime members. The online retailer also upped the price of its year-long Prime subscription — which offers access to free and shorter shipping times, a video streaming service and other perks — from $99 to $119.

To get the Whole Foods discounts, Amazon Prime members can download the Whole Foods app to show at the register or give the cashier their phone number.

The Amazon Prime discounts take place of the store’s former loyalty program, which offered special coupons and points.

"By offering greater discounts on sale items… launching savings for Prime members is an amazing opportunity to bring our industry-leading quality standards and delicious food to more customers at a better price," said CEO John Mackey in a prepared statement.
