It's cheaper to buy than rent in Tampa Bay

It’s cheaper to buy than rent in Tampa Bay although buyers in Pasco and Hernando Counties would save much more than those in Pinellas and Hillsborough, a new study says.

Someone earning the average wage in Pasco would spend 45.2 percent of income on rent for a three-bedroom apartment but just 32.5 percent to buy the median-priced house, ATTOM Data solutions found in analyzing rent and wage data from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In Hernando, rent would take 48.7 percent of income versus 32 percent to buy.

The margins are much smaller in Pinellas, where 38 percent of income would go for rent compared to 37 percent to buy; and in Hillsborough, where renting would take 35 percent of income versus 34.7 percent to buy.

Figures include taxes and insurance and were based on loans for 80 percent of purchase price.

Of the nation’s 447 most populous counties, the study found that the least affordable for homebuyers were in California, the Washington D. C. and New York City areas while the most affordable were in Alabama, Illinois, Ohio and Tennessee.
