For the first time in more than a decade, Coca-Cola has announced it'll introduce new flavors in the U.S. starting Feb. 25.
The flavors: Orange Vanilla Coke and Orange Vanilla Coke Zero Sugar.
The new products will be available in 12-ounce cans and 20-ounce plastic bottles, the company announced in a release. They also will be available exclusively at Wendy’s restaurants in fountain dispensers through the end of the NCAA March Madness basketball tournament, after which they'll become available for distribution in all Coca-Cola dispensers.
In choosing a new flavor, the Atlanta-based company says it tested three others — raspberry, lemon and ginger — but focus groups liked the orange and vanilla combo "much more." The announcement comes less than a year after Coca-Cola debuted flavors Orange No Sugar in Australia and Orange Vanilla in Canada, both of which were major successes, according to the release.
“What we realized is that we had a diamond in the rough when we looked at our flavors portfolio,” Kate Carpenter, Coca-Cola's brand director, said in the release. “The growth of Cherry Coke and Vanilla Coke — and their zero-calorie variants — has been really strong in recent years even with very limited marketing support.”
Vanilla Coke and Vanilla Coke Zero were introduced in 2007, and Cherry Coke has been around since 1985.
“We wanted to bring back positive memories of carefree summer days,” Carpenter said. “That’s why we leaned into the orange-vanilla flavor combination — which is reminiscent of the creamy orange popsicles we grew up loving, but in a classically Coke way.”
