Pro-choice, LGBT advocates call for rejection of Kavanaugh

Pro-choice and LGBT advocates assembled Thursday in front of the Florida Supreme Court in Tallahassee to urge that Brett Kavanaugh be rejected as a nominee to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Missy Wesolowski, a statewide organizer for Florida Planned Parenthood affiliates, said Kavanaugh ruled in a case to delay an undocumented immigrant from getting access to abortion rights guaranteed by the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade decision.

"The right to access abortion safely and legally in this country is absolutely on the line," she said.

Wesolowski also said Kavanaugh would be hostile to the Affordable Care Act and to workplace protections for Americans.

"By nominating Judge Kavanaugh, the Trump-Pence administration continues its self-serving assault on civil rights, women's rights and LGBTQ rights," said Jon Harris Maurer, public policy director of Equality Florida, a group that seeks equal rights for LGBT Floridians. "The stakes are high for the LGBT community."

Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson, who faces a tough re-election challenge from Gov. Rick Scott, is being urged to oppose Kavanaugh's nomination to the nation's highest court.

About three dozen people attended the midday rally. Speakers included Millie Zehnder of Orlando, a Florida State University student, and Ray Seaman of Progress Florida and Florida Why Courts Matter Coalition.
