Ex-UF, Jefferson athlete Deiondre Porter sentenced to 10 years

Former Florida Gators defensive back and Jefferson High star Deiondre Porter faces 10 years in prison after accepting a plea deal on felony charges including aggravated assault, battery on a pregnant woman and robbery with a firearm.

His no-contest plea was accepted last week, according to Alachua County court records. If convicted, Porter could have been sentenced to life in prison.

Porter was accused of criminal wrongdoing in two separate incidents. The first was in October 2015, when police alleged that he shot a handgun near his pregnant girlfriend. The Gators dismissed him from the team immediately after his arrest.

The second incident took place six months later, when police allege he and another man robbed a Verizon Wireless store in Gainesville at gunpoint. He was previously sentenced to six years in his role in the armed robbery of a different phone store, in Jacksonville.

At Jefferson, Porter was a standout quarterback and led the state with almost 4,700 yards as a senior to earn the Guy Toph trophy as Hillsborough County's top high school football player. He switched to cornerback at UF, where he redshirted in 2014 and played on special teams the next season before his dismissal.
