Quinton Flowers, Deadrin Senat scoop up ‘all-bowl’ honors

For a noon game held in dreary weather on the next-to-last shopping day before Christmas, the Birmingham Bowl attracted some significant national attention.

Case in point: Bulls QB Quinton Flowers and DT Deadrin Senat have been hailed for their respective performances in the game ever since.

Both have appeared on no fewer than three "all-bowl" teams in recent days. Flowers was the first-team quarterback on ESPN's squad, and a second-teamer (behind Alabama second-half hero Tua Tagavailoa) on the Bleacher Report team.

Senat was a Sports Illustrated first-team selection, and second-team Bleacher Report pick.

Flowers totaled 417 yards in the Bulls' 38-34 victory against Texas Tech, accounting for all 80 yards on the final drive, which ended with his 26-yard touchdown pass to Tyre McCants with 16 seconds remaining.

"Early on (in the bowl game), Flowers was nothing short of dreadful," the Bleacher Report synopsis says.

"On South Florida's first five possessions, he had five carries for 11 yards and completed just three of his 13 pass attempts for 31 yards. … But he was masterful on the final three possessions…"

Senat continued his late-season tear, finishing with five tackles including three sacks.

Both will join USF teammates D'Ernest Johnson and Deatrick Nichols in St. Petersburg next week for practices in preparation for the Jan. 20 East-West Shrine Game at Tropicana Field.

In other USF football news, the school's sports-information staff noted Thursday the Bulls finished among the top 25 nationally in 14 team statistical categories. The highest finishes were for passes intercepted (second with 20), tackles for loss (fifth with 8.4 per game) and total offense (sixth with 513 yards per game).
