If you think Tampa’s Cigar City Brewing has popped up too frequently in this feature, blame a robust and inspired seasonal release calendar.

In addition to more typical seasonal releases (like a pumpkin brew in fall, and a winter warmer in winter), Cigar City has branched out in several novel directions, like the late-summer Humidor Series IPA (featured in this column last month) and its successor, Wedge Cut, a lemon-tinged American wheat ale that will be available through the remainder of the year.

Originally announced at the end of 2018, Wedge Cut has finally hit the shelves in 40 states, which means that you’ll be able to easily find it at beer shops and grocery stores throughout the bay area, as well as at Cigar City’s tasting room at 3924 W Spruce St. in Tampa, both on draft and in six-packs.

The idea is to showcase the popular Lemon Drop hop variety, an herbal and citrusy hop hailing from Hopsteiner Farms in Yakima, Wa. Combined with actual lemon zest added to a base beer laden with a chewy, biscuit-like sweetness from the addition of malted wheat, Wedge Cut is both rich and refreshing; grain-forward with a crisp citrus finish.

The beer’s name also is particularly well-conceived, referring to a freshly cut lemon wedge, a golf stroke and a type of cut used on cigars. You’d think this would be a better fit for a summer release, but it’s Florida — this beer will perform as well on the golf course now as it would have in August.

Seasonal weather notwithstanding, Wedge Cut is a killer limited release that you’ll want to have in the fridge while it’s still available.
