For more than 25 years, the attorneys at Catania & Catania have dedicated their considerable expertise to representing individuals and families – not corporations – in personal injury cases. There is no fee for their services unless, and until, they win your personal injury case. During a highly stressful time, this is one less thing for a client to worry about – and it’s a biggie.

One area of personal injury that firm co-founder Peter Catania is well versed in is auto accidents. He shares valuable information in response to the frequently asked question, "How long will my auto accident claim take to resolve?"

Explains Peter, "You want to make sure, when it comes time to talk to your insurance company about a resolution, that you have a full understanding of the injuries sustained, if they will continue to affect you in the future, and the cost, nature and duration of any care that will be required. A thorough accounting of these details is critical – because once a settlement amount has been agreed upon and you receive a check, you will be required to sign a release, which is a contract between you and the insurance company that absolves them from further obligation to you for that injury, in perpetuity."

Continues Peter, "I normally move cautiously in the early stages of the claim process, to give the accident victim the necessary time to heal, or achieve MMI (Maximum Medical Improvement, when all acceptable medical options have been applied). Once I see what that person’s MMI looks like, I can formulate what the demands should be. The more severe the accident, typically, the greater the settlement.

"More straightforward cases are resolved in somewhere between 6 to 8 months, and don’t usually require litigation. Exceptions would be if there were a major dispute about the cause of the accident, or the value of the damages and their impact on your life and earning potential. In those cases, you would go to suit and a jury of six would decide."
